Disclosed is an improved water heater and method of heating water retained in a storage tank having a flue passing through it. The apparatus and method directs hot gases flowing upwardly along the flue toward the flue's wall when heat transfer between those gases and the water is desired. The apparatus and method also directs the air or gases flowing upwardly within the flue away from the flue's wall when heat transfer is undesirable. The apparatus includes a plurality of moveable flow control fins secured at various locations along the length of a baffle supported within the flue. Each fin is secured to the baffle by a piece of bi-metallic material whose shape changes in response to its temperature. When hot gases flow through the flue during a water heating mode, the bi-metallic pieces position the fins near the middle of the flue along the baffle's length and direct the flow of hot gases outward toward the flue's wall. When relatively hot gases are not passing through the flue and the only gas or air flow in the flue is that associated with a pilot burner, for example, the bi-metallic pieces sense the relatively cooler gas/air flow and position the fins near the flue's wall where they obstruct flow along the wall and direct it along the central axis portion of the baffle.
Chauffe-eau amélioré et méthode pour chauffer l'eau à l'intérieur d'un réservoir de stockage traversé par un conduit de cheminée. L'installation et la méthode utilisent l'écoulement vertical de gaz chauds mis en contact avec les parois du conduit de cheminée aux fins de transfert de chaleur lorsque l'eau doit être chauffée. L'installation et la méthode font aussi appel à un dispositif utilisé pour diriger le flux gazeux à haute température des parois du conduit de cheminée lorsqu'aucun transfert de chaleur n'est souhaité. Le dispositif comporte une pluralité d'ailettes mobiles disposées en différents endroits le long d'une chicane et dont le positionnement permet de diriger le flux gazeux. Chaque ailette est fixée à la chicane par l'intermédiaire d'un organe bimétallique dont la forme varie en fonction de la température. Lorsque des gaz chauds sont en circulation à l'intérieur du conduit de cheminée en mode de chauffage de l'eau, les organes bimétalliques positionnent les ailettes près du centre de l'écoulement gazeux sur la longueur de la chicane, dirigeant ainsi les gaz chauds vers la paroi du conduit de cheminée. En l'absence de circulation de gaz relativement chauds à travers le conduit, lorsque le flux gazeux provient d'une source de chaleur négligeable, comme une veilleuse, par exemple, les organes bimétalliques réagissent à la basse température du flux gazeux en positionnant les ailettes près des parois du conduit, d'où elles bloquent l'écoulement gazeux pour le diriger vers le centre de la chicane.
