A device for causing tissue necrosis comprises a flexible cannula having proximal end distal ends. The heat generating tip at the distal end is used for treating tissue. A supply of fluid in communication with the flexible cannula is provided such that a predetermined amount of said fluid is vaporizable in response to heat generated by the heat generating tip when the device is in use. Sufficient fluid is vaporized to maintain the tissue at a temperature no greater than about 100°C. The device includes a cladded optical fiber waveguide connected to a source of laser radiation. The heat generating tip is located at the distal end of the waveguide.
