An apparatus for delivering laser energy to a target through a radiation- transmitting waveguide having a distal end terminating in a tip which is in contact with the target during delivery, while protecting the tip from heat damage, which apparatus comprises a waveguide for transmitting laser radiation and having a distal end terminating in a tip adapted to be placed in contact with the target to deliver laser energy directly to the target at the site of contact, and means for delivering a controlled small amount of liquid to the target adjacent to the tip, which small amount is just sufficient to limit the temperature at the target to not more than the failure temperature of the tip. An apparatus assembly for performing ILC incorporating a waveguide and a method for protecting the tip of a waveguide from damage is also disclosed.
Appareil permettant de soumettre une cible à l'énergie laser par l'intermédiaire d'un guide d'ondes transmettant le rayonnement et possédant une extrémité distale portant un embout qui se trouve au contact de la cible pendant l'application de l'énergie laser, tout en protégeant l'embout de toute détérioration due à la chaleur. Ledit appareil comporte un guide d'ondes transmettant le rayonnement laser et possédant une extrémité distale portant un embout adapté pour se placer au contact de la cible afin de la soumettre directement à l'énergie laser au niveau du point de contact, ainsi qu'un dispositif destiné à libérer une petite quantité prédéterminée de liquide au niveau de la cible et au voisinage de l'embout, cette petite quantité étant tout juste suffisante pour éviter que la température régnant au niveau de la cible ne dépasse la température à laquelle l'embout est détérioré. On a également prévu un ensemble d'appareils permettant de réaliser une intervention de coagulation interstitielle au laser, et comportant un guide d'ondes, ainsi qu'un procédé de protection de l'embout d'un guide d'ondes contre la détérioration.
