An apparatus and method for detecting fluid leaks in a fluid-filled expandable device used to treat body tissue. The apparatus comprises an expandable device defining a fluid reservoir therein for holding a conductive fluid. A supply conduit is in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir for delivering the conductive fluid into the fluid reservoir. A first electrode lead is in electrical contact with the fluid reservoir. A second electrode lead is positioned outside the expandable device. A power supply is provided for generating a voltage between the first electrode and the grounding electrode. A detector detects variations in the electrical current passing between the first electrode and the grounding electrode.
