An ATM switch system including input and output ports with associated buffers (12a, 14c, 16a, 12b, 14b, 16b), source traffic control system including shared bus coupling the ports, and arbiter controlling the transfer of data. The arbiter monitors the internal destination addresses of the ATM cells, and increments a counter (32a, 32b) associated with the destination port when the destination corresponds, and decrements other counters which do not correspond to the destination. Bursts for a particular output port cause the count of the associated counter to grow large; whereas long breaks cause the count to drop. The counts are compared to a high threshold (125) which alerts arbiter (170) to the danger of output port buffer overflowing. Upon receiving the alert, arbiter (170) either stalls by refusing to grant access until the counter decrements below the first threshold, or grants bus access to the input port associated with the output port. A low threshold (140) is utilized to declare that burst is over and to free the counter for tracking a new burst to the same or a different output port.
L'invention concerne un système commutateur ATM comportant une pluralité de ports d'entrée et de ports de sortie possédant tous des tampons associés (12a, 14c, 16a, 12b, 14b, 16b), un système de régulation de trafic source comportant un bus partagé reliant les ports, et un arbitre régulant le transfert des données. L'arbitre contrôle les adresses de destination internes des cellules ATM, et incrémente un compteur (32a, 32b) associé au port de destination lorsque la destination correspond, et décrémente les autres compteurs qui ne correspondent pas à la destination. Les rafales destinées à un port de sortie particulier font augmenter la valeur du compteur associé, tandis que de longues interruptions font chuter la valeur dudit compteur. Ces valeurs de compteurs sont comparées à un seuil haut (125) qui sert à avertir l'arbitre (170) du danger de dépassement de capacité du tampon du port de sortie. Lorsqu'il reçoit cet avertissement, l'arbitre (170) soit se bloque en refusant d'accorder tout accès jusqu'à ce que le compteur repasse en-dessous du premier seuil, soit accorde au port d'entrée associé au port de sortie l'accès au bus. Un seuil bas (140) est utilisé pour indiquer que la rafale est terminée et pour permettre au compteur de suivre une nouvelle rafale destinée au même port de sortie ou à un port différent.
