A lumber lug loader for placing boards onto a lugged transfer deck is disclosed. The lug loader has a lower board accelerating deck and an upper board-contacting member. The lower board accelerating deck and the upper board-contacting member have driven moving surfaces which can be clamped against the board from above and below. Because the boards are clamped while they are being accelerated to the speed of the lugged transfer deck, the boards can be subjected to high acceleration without excessive slipping or significant damage to the boards. The boards are accelerated smoothly and quickly. This design therefore allows for operation at higher speeds than is possible with previous lug loaders. The lug loader also provides a movable overhead stop. In operation, boards are accumulated on a smooth transfer deck behind the stop. When a board is present at the stop and a row of lugs on the lugged transfer deck is approaching the correct position for loading the stop is retracted and the moving surfaces of the upper and lower board-contacting members are brought into forcible contact with the board. The board is accelerated between the upper and lower board-contacting members. After the board is accelerated it is carried to and deposited on the lugged transfer deck. While the board is being accelerated the stop is put in place behind the board. The cycle is repeated each time a row of lugs on the lugged transfer deck passes. This accomplishes reliable high speed loading of individual pieces of lumber (singulating), onto the lugged transfer deck, at the correct position relative to the lug.

Le dispositif de chargement comporte un tablier pour accélérer les planches surmonté d'un mécanisme dont la surface vient en contact avec les planches. Les planches peuvent être saisies entre les surfaces en défilement du tablier accélérateur et du mécanisme d'entraînement supérieur. Les planches étant saisies pendant leur accélération à la vitesse du tablier de transfert, elles peuvent être soumises à une accélération importante sans risque de glissement ou de dommages. Les planches sont accélérées en douceur et rapidement. Cette conception permet un fonctionnement à plus grande vitesse qu'il n'était possible antérieurement. Le dispositif de chargement comporte aussi un dispositif de butée mobile. En cours de fonctionnement, les planches s'accumulent à l'arrière de la butée de freinage mobile. Lorsqu'un planche se trouve en contact avec la butée de freinage et qu'un rang d'ergots du tablier de transfert approche de la position appropriée pour le chargement, la butée de freinage se rétracte et la planche est saisie entre les surfaces mobiles de contact et soumise à l'accélération. Lorsque son accélération est complète, la planche est acheminée vers le tablier de transfert pour y être déposée. Pendant que la planche est soumise à l'accélération, la butée de freinage mobile est placée à l'arrière de la planche. Le cycle est répété chaque fois que passe un rang d'ergots du tablier de transfert. Cette installation permet d'effectuer le chargement à haute vitesse de pièces de bois individuelles (chargement individuel) sur le tablier de transfert à ergots et dans une position appropriée par rapport aux ergots.
