A method and apparatus for selecting a quantizer scale for each macroblock within a frame to optimize the coding rate is presented (130). A quantizer scale is selected for each macroblock (120) within each frame such that the target bit rate for the frame is achieved while maintaining a uniform visual quality over the entire frame.

On décrit un procédé et un système qui permettent de sélectionner une échelle de quantification pour chaque macrobloc à l'intérieur d'une image en vue d'en optimiser le débit de codage (130). Une échelle de quantification est sélectionnée pour chaque macrobloc (120) d'une image, afin d'obtenir le débit binaire cible pour ladite image tout en assurant une qualité visuelle uniforme sur l'ensemble de l'image.
