The humidity level and the species of a piece of wood can be determined by the present apparatus and method, based on current signals passing through the piece of wood. A set of first, second, and third electrodes of a probe are inserted into the piece of wood which may be travelling on a conveyor. The second electrode has an input for receiving electric power. The other two electrodes have different dimensions and are spaced from the second electrode in different directions and have outputs for transmission of current signals having passed through the piece of wood. The probe is driven toward and away from the piece of wood by a driving mechanism controlled by a control circuit. A measuring circuit is coupled to the outputs of the electrodes. The current signals are measured by the measuring circuit, which determines the humidity level and wood species.
