An apparatus (10) is provided for imaging traveling waves (14) in a medium (12). A wavefront is modulated by a modulator (43) at a frequency such that a difference frequency between wavefronts is within a response range of the sensing media (52). Such modulation produces an image of the vibrating medium having an output intensity that is substantially linear with small physical variation within the vibrating medium.
