APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MEASURING ROLL DIAMETERS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The diameter of a generally cylindrical roll (12) is accurately measured by holding a gauge (10) against the surface (21) of an arc of the roll (12), determining the approximate variation in diameter from a standard diameter with a primary sensor (26) located between two supports (18,19) and determining corrections to the approximate variation in diameter through secondary sensors (34) located adjacent to the supports (18,19). The gauge supports (22,25) also indicate misalignment of the central plane (13) of the gauge (10) with a circumferential plane (17) of the roll (12) by lack of contact of the supports (22,25) with the roll surface (21) and by measurements of the secondary sensors (34) over a predetermined amount.
