Apparatus for milling the casing of an oil or gas well comprises a downhole assembly which is run into the well on a rotatable drill string. The assembly comprises a motor (6) the body of which is connected to the drill string and the output shaft of which is connected to a casing mill (9). In use, the drill string is rotated in one rotational direction and the motor (6) is operated to rotate the output shaft thereof in the same rotational direction whereby the speed of rotation of the mill (9) is faster than the rotational speed of the drill string. Because the rotational speed of the milling tool (9) cannot be less than the rotational speed of the output shaft of the motor (6) relative to the body thereof extreme variations in the rotational speed of the milling tool due to winding up of the drill string are avoided. The downhole assembly may incorporate a taper mill (11), stabilizers (10, 8 and 5) and a jet sub (4). The assembly may also incorporate a constant thrust device for producing a substantially constant thrust loading on the milling tool and one or more cement removing tools.

Cette machine, qui permet de fraiser le cuvelage d'un puits de pétrole ou de gaz, comprend un ensemble de forage descendant dans le puits grâce à un train de tiges rotatif. Cet ensemble comporte un moteur (6) dont le corps est relié au train de tiges et dont l'arbre de sortie est relié à une fraise (9) de cuvelage. Pendant le fonctionnement, le train de tiges tourne dans une direction de rotation et le moteur (6) fait tourner son arbre de sortie dans la même direction de rotation, ce qui donne à la fraise (9) une vitesse de rotation supérieure à celle du train de tiges. La vitesse de rotation de la fraise (9) ne pouvant être inférieure à celle de l'arbre de sortie du moteur (6) par rapport au corps de ce dernier, on évite des variations extrêmes de la vitesse de rotation de la fraise dues à la torsion longitudinale du train de tiges. L'ensemble de forage peut comprendre une fraise conique (11), des stabilisateurs (10, 8, 5) et un raccord à jet (4), ainsi, éventuellement, qu'un dispositif à poussée constante, donnant une charge à poussée pratiquement constante appliquée à la fraise, et un ou plusieurs outils d'élimination du ciment.
