An apparatus and a method for minimizing the turn on time for a receiver operating in a discontinuous receive mode. In a communication unit the receiver receives a signal (118) having desirable data (word A) and undesirable data (word B). The receiver (104) has a discontinuous receive mode of operation wherein the receiver (104) is turned on when expecting the desirable data (word A) and turned off when expecting the undesirable data (word B). A duration of time that the receiver (104) has been turned off is determined. The receiver (104) is turned on at a time prior to the arrival ofthe desirable data (word A) responsive to the duration of time that the receiver (104) has been turned off. The present invention advantageously minimizes the turn on time for the receiver (104) operating in a discontinuous receive mode to save current drain.

Appareil et méthode de réduction du temps de mise sous tension d'un récepteur fonctionnant en mode de réception discontinue. Dans un poste de communication, le récepteur reçoit un signal (118) comprenant un mot voulu (mot A) et un mot non voulu (mot B). Le récepteur (104) offre un mode de fonctionnement en réception discontinue dans lequel il est mis sous tension lorsque le mot voulu (mot A) est attendu et mis hors tension lorsque le mot non voulu (mot B) est attendu. On détermine une période pendant laquelle le récepteur (104) a été mis hors tension. Le récepteur (104) est mis sous tension à un certain temps précédant l'arrivée du mot voulu (mot A), qui dépend de la période pendant laquelle le récepteur (104) a été mis hors tension. La présente invention réduit avantageusement le temps de mise sous tension du récepteur (104) fonctionnant en mode de réception discontinue, afin de réduire la consommation du courant.
