An apparatus and method for mobile coal sampling is provided, wherein borehole returns comprised of formational cuttings, ground water and air from a borehole first pass through a cyclone, and the water and cuttings if appropriate for analysis, are passed to a shaker. After the water passes through the shaker, the cuttings are stored in bags. If the returns are deemed unsuitable for analysis, the trough leading the cuttings from the cyclone to the shaker is positioned so that the cuttings are diverted away from the shaker.
