An apparatus and method for mobile coal sampling is provided, wherein mineral fines and ground water from a borehole first pass through a cyclone, and then the remaining water and fines, if appropriate for analysis, are passed to a shaker. After the water passes through the shaker, the fines are stored in bags. If the fines are deemed unsuitable for analysis, the trough leading the fines from the cyclone to the shaker is positioned so that the fines are diverted away from the shaker.
