An apparatus and method are provided for molding clusters of fibers, including at least some thermoplastic fibers, into products at a cost, quality, and performance level acceptable for commercial production. The clusters are dedensified and then placed into an empty mold (20). The mold (20) has apertures to facilitate the transfer of thermal energy through the mold (20). A linear conveyor (32) is used to transport the mold (20) through a plurality of process locations on a continuous or semi-continuous basis. Included is a heating location (48) wherein the mold (20) is heated, providing an influx of thermal energy sufficient to fuse the thermoplastic fibers to form a heated product. A cooling location (50) follows the heating location (48), wherein the mold (20) and the heated product contained therein are cooled to produce a cooled product. The cooled product is then ejected from the mold (20).
L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé servant à mouler des groupes de fibres, comprenant au moins des fibres thermoplastiques, en des produits dont le coût, la qualité et la performance sont acceptables pour une production commerciale. Les groupes sont dédenséifiés, puis placés dans un moule (20) vide. Ce moule (20) possède des ouvertures (28) destinées à faciliter le transfert d'énergie thermique à travers ledit moule (20). On utilise une bande transporteuse (32) linéaire, pour transporter le moule dans une pluralité de zones de traitement, sur une base continue ou semi-continue. L'invention concerne également une zone chauffante (48) dans laquelle le moule (20) est chauffé, de façon à fournir un influx thermique suffisant pour faire fondre les fibres thermoplastiques, afin de former un produit chauffé. Une zone de refroidissement (50) fait suite à la zone de chauffage (48), le moule (20) et le produit chauffé qu'il contient étant refroidis de manière à former un produit refroidi. Ce produit refroidi est ensuite expulsé du moule (20).
