-27- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus and method for measuring bolt tension in situ is disclosed. In one embodiment, a tab (12) is disposed in a radial groove (42) in a washer (10) with the proximal and (46) of the tab (12) secured in the groove (42). When the washer (10) is incorporated in a bolt assembly and the bolt (14) is tightened, the distal portion (48) of the tab (12) deflects. By measuring the force required to return the distal portion (48) of the tab (12) to its undeflected position, actual bolt tension can be determined. The tab may, instead, be incorporated in the bearing surface of a bolt head (306) or nut (406).
