Apparatus and method for generating multiple descriptions of compressed data is disclosed. In the apparatus and method, transform coefficients are generated from input data and quantized. An energy distribution of the quantized transform coefficients is generated. Based on the energy distribution, the transform coefficients are grouped into layers. By entropy coding different number of layers, multiple descriptions of compressed data are generated.

La présente invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé permettant de produire des descriptions multiples de données compressées. Selon le mode de réalisation décrit dans cette invention, les coefficients de transformation sont générés à partir de données d'entrée, puis quantifiés. Une répartition énergétique des coefficients de transformation quantifiés est produite. Sur la base de cette répartition énergétique, les coefficients de transformation sont groupés en couches. Le codage entropique d'un nombre différent de couches permet de générer plusieurs descriptions des données compressées.
