A method and apparatus for exercising access control over television programs using a parental control interface that has different functions are provided. The method requires a password to enter into a master mode for obtaining unlimited access to all the functions of the parental control interface. Once in the master mode, the user may enter a criterion for blocking a television program from being viewed or recorded or the user can override an already blocked television program. Once a master password is entered, the system is in a Master Password mode until the TV is turned off, the user exits the VChip Plus+ mode, or a certain time delay expires. If a user, not in the master mode, attempts to watch or record a program that meets the blocking criterion and the program does not meet the overriding criterion, a prompt is provided to the user to enter the password. Upon entering a correct password, the program is unblocked.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant aux parents d'exercer un contrôle d'accès sur les émissions de télévision, en utilisant une interface de contrôle à plusieurs fonctions. Ce procédé nécessite l'introduction d'un mot de passe en mode maître pour obtenir un accès illimité à toutes les fonctions de l'interface de contrôle parental. Un fois dans le mode maître, l'utilisateur peut spécifier un critère pour bloquer une émission de télévision et empêcher qu'elle ne soit regardée ou enregistrée, ou encore demander de ne pas tenir compte du blocage effectué sur une émission de télévision. Une fois le mot de passe introduit, le système entre en mode mot de passe maître jusqu'à l'extinction du poste de télévision, que l'utilisateur quitte le mode plus + de la puce antiviolence, ou qu'on dépasse un certaine délai. Par ailleurs, si un utilisateur ne se trouvant pas dans le mode maître tente de regarder ou d'enregistrer une émission qui répond au critère de blocage et que celle-ci ne réponde pas au critère de non prise en considération, le système demande à l'utilisateur d'introduire le mot de passe. Si le mot de passe est correct, l'émission est débloquée.
