An apparatus (10) for positioning a port (16) within an aperture of a web of film (18) is provided. The apparatus includes a chain loop (12) including a plurality of forks (14) for releasably retaining ports (16). The chain (12) is fed around at least a first (20), a second (22), and a third (24) rotatable sprocket, the first (20) and second (22) rotatable sprockets being coupled to a frame (34) and located in a substantially aligned relationship to each other, perpendicular to a portion of the film (18), the third sprock- et (24) being located at a position offset from a plane defined by the first (20) and second (22) sprockets. The apparatus (10) in- cludes a member (49) for moving the first (20) and second (22) sprockets from a first position to a second position and from the second position to the first position. The apparatus (10) also includes a member (60) for releasably preventing the rotation of the third sprocket (24) and an indexer (26) for accurately regulating the rotation of the first sprocket (20). An improved method and improved fork is also provided.
