ABSTRACT A rotary chip carrier transport system (12) for transporting semi- conductor chips contained within chip carriers (14) through a wire bonding operation includes a final adjustment mechanism for advancing the chip carrier (14) after a transport drive motor (124) has been stopped at a predetermined position. The driving motor (124) drives a transport system (12) in a first direction thereby causing gears in the gear train to wear on the driving side (150) of the gear teeth. Thus, the position of the chip carrier (14) with respect to the position of the driving motor varies as the gears wear down. The final adjustment is accomplished by using an air driven piston to drive a clutch (40, 48) which in turn drives a shaft (26) that is rigidly connected to a positioning platform (70). This action causes two gears (60, 108) to engage on non-driving side (152) of a pair of gear teeth, thus precisely posi- tioning the chip carrier (14). Thus the chip carrier (14) is precisely posi- tioned without the necessity of special gears or an extra set of gears.
