Secondary air and water mist are sprayed into the combustion chamber above the combustion grate, The flue gases entering the flue gas cooler are thereby preliminarily cooled. By increasing the dew point, the effectiveness of the flue gas cleaner is en- hanced. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.
