An apparatus and method for preventing access to an area, such as, a parking spot, are provided. The apparatus has a housing adapted to be mounted, preferably, to a ceiling, a sign, and a line. A reversible motor is provided inside the housing with the line running from the motor to the sign. The motor is controlled to turn in opposite directions to raise and lower the sign in relation to the ceiling, to allow the sign to be positioned relative to the ceiling so as to allow or prevent access to the area.
