ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A highly effective and energy efficient new method for processing various organic materials into more useful states include enclosing a material in the form of aggregate pieces within a chamber having a vertical extent, at least partly closing the chamber to air to control the amount of oxygen contained therein, conveying the aggregate pieces through the vertical extent within a predetermined time by vibratory action, heating the chamber to a preselected temperature sufficient for converting volatile hydrocarbon constituents of the material to a gaseous state, and removing off-gases from the chamber for further use. Apparatus used in carrying out the method includes preferably first and second chambers, each chamber having a continuous length tray spiraling along a vertical extent of the chamber and with the tray surrounding a vertical support. Vibration generators secured to the support impart vibratory forces to the tray to cause pieces of material to be conveyed from one end of the tray to the other, e.g., from the bottom to top, by vibratory action. Heating of the material is carried out in one such chamber and with resultant off-gases supporting combustion for such heating. After heating, material is transferred from the first chamber to a second chamber, also closed to air, for cooling as pieces similarly traverse the vertical extent of a similar vibration-driven spiral conveyor in the second chamber. If drying of material is desired to reduce moisture content prior to carbonization, this can be accomplished in a third chamber heated with combustion gases from heating of the first chamber. This third chamber can also be used simply as a dryer for material that is not to be further processed for carbonization, with material traversing the vertical extent of a similar vibration-driven spiral conveyor as with the first and second chambers. The processing may involve converting wood chips or other lignocellulosic or biomass materials into charcoal or carbon, carbonization or pyrolysis or reduction of moisture content of such materials, converting tire waste into carbon black, extraction of keragen or bitumen from oil, shales or sands, etc., converting coal into coke, as well as gasification of coal, as well as blending material of the same or different components that require mixing under higher than atmospheric temperatures.
