The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for the formation of at least nearly string-like particles, particularly for the formation of metal or metal alloy particles. Such string-like particles are particularly interesting for manufacture of fiber- reinforced matrix composites, which comprise inorganic fibers that are embedded as reinforcement members in a matrix material, such as for instance a metal. The invention includes pre-forms of fibers that have a metallic core sheathed by a thick annular surface film of one of an oxide and a nitride of the metal, which are suitable for reinforcing a light matrix metal such as one of magnesium and aluminum or an alloy thereof. The invention further includes processes for the preparation of metal matrix composites and pre-forms.
