ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to an article for protecting a substrate, comprising: (a) a flexible matrix which comprises a plurality of open interstices, the intertices having an average volume of less than 0.01 inch3 (0.16 cm3); (b) an impregnant, comprising a plurality of interconnected segments which lie within the interstices of the matrix, and having a cone penetration value, measured as herein described, of 100 to 350 (10-1 mm); the matrix and the impregnant being such that when the article is stretched, the matrix reaches its ultimate elongation before the impregnant reaches its ultimate elongation.
