ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This discloses a process for recovering a particulate uranium oxide material containing uranyl fluoride impurities as well as other impurities from a gaseous suspension of the material and simultaneously treating the particulate material to form a ceramic uranium dioxide material having improved properties. The gas stream is contacted with a dilute solution of ammonium hydroxide to form a slurry of the particulate uranium oxide which is then dewatered and calcined to yield a uranium dioxide product which is an admixture of uranium dioxides derived from two different precursors. There is disclosed a preferred practice of this method for recovering the uranium oxide from a gas stream produced in a gas phase reaction of uranium hexafluoride, an oxygen-containing gas and a reducing gas. An apparatus suitable for carrying out the process described herein is also disclosed.
