Apparatus and method for reducing NOX emissions from furnace flue gas are provided in which a stream of natural gas or other fluid fuel which has little or no fixed nitrogen is introduced into the upper portion of the furnace. The fuel stream has sufficient turbulence to form eddies surrounded by the flue gas so that the fuel reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the flue gas to form ammonia-like and cyanide-like compounds and nitrogen gas. The ammonia-like and cyanide-like compounds react with additional amounts of nitrogen oxides in the flue gas to form nitrogen gas, water vapor and carbon dioxide. In this manner, the amount of nitrogen oxides in the flue gas is reduced. The invention can be easily applied to new furnaces or retrofitted on existing furnaces.
On décrit un appareil et une méthode pour réduire les émissions de NOX d'un gaz de combustion d'un four dans lequel un courant de gaz naturel ou d'un autre fluide combustible qui ne possède pas, ou peu, d'azote fixé est introduit dans la partie supérieure du four. Le courant de combustible est suffisamment turbulent pour former des tourbillons entourés par le gaz de combustion de manière que le combustible réagisse avec les oxydes d'azote dans le gaz de combustion pour former des composés apparentés à l'ammoniac et au cyanure ainsi que de l'azote gazeux. Les composés apparentés à l'ammoniac et au cyanure réagissent avec des quantités additionnelles d'oxydes d'azote dans le gaz de combustion pour former de l'azote gazeux, de la vapeur d'eau et du dioxyde de carbone. Ainsi, la quantité d'oxydes d'azote dans le gaz de combustion est réduite. L'invention peut être incorporée facilement aux nouveaux fours ou être adaptée après coup aux fours existants.
