An apparatus and method for acquiring biopsy specimens includes an outer cannula (20) having a bevelled distal end (22) and an opposing proximal end (28) having a Luer-type fitting (32). A stylet (34) having a like bevelled distal end (36) is inserted within the outer cannula (20) before the cannula is placed within the patient. Following placement of the outer cannula (20), the stylet (34) is removed, and a biopsy actuator (48) equipped with a biopsy needle (50) is then inserted within the proximal end of the cannula. The distal tip (52) of the biopsy needle is provided with a specimen retaining notch (56). The biopsy actuator (48) in- cludes a mating Luer-type fitting that is releasably attached to the proximal end of the cannula. The biopsy actuator (48) includes a spring-loaded trigger mechanism (68) for advancing the distal end of the biopsy needle (50) to expose the specimen retaining notch, and thereafter rapidly advances the distal end of the cannula to cut tissue prolapsed within the notch. The Luer fittings are then disengaged, the biopsy actuator is withdrawn, and a second specimen may then be taken by inserting a second biopsy actua- tor in a like manner.
