- 28 - APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SPARGING A GAS INTO A LIQUID Abstract of the Disclosure An improved apparatus and method for sparging a gas into a body of liquid wherein the gas is discharged at sonic velocity into the liquid producing a shock wave and creating a jet of dispersed gas and liquid. The jet induces cocurrent flow in contiguous liquid preventing coalescence and enhancing mass transfer between the phases. In apparatus for the practice of the method, the gas discharge nozzle is directed into an acceleration tube through which the jet and induced liquid flow pass and are discharged into a larger draft tube thereby increasing the induced liquid flow.
