A product storage apparatus (10) or rack comprises a base (20) having a product placement portion (21) capable of receiving a product; means for clamping (42, 44, 46, 48) the product to the apparatus when the product is positioned on the apparatus; and, a linkage assembly (32, 35, 36, 38) that operates the clamping means, the linkage assembly (32, 35, 36, 38) optionally including a self-locking mechanism that locks the clamping means in a closed position, such that when the clamping means is in the closed position, force applied directly to the clamping means will not open the clamping means. A foot pedal (34) may operate the linkage assembly (32, 35, 36, 38). In one embodiment, the self-locking mechanism is an over-center mechanism. One or more product storage apparatuses (10) can be attached to, or incorporated into, a shipping rack (100). In the shipping rack (100), the linkage assembly of one master product storage apparatus or pod (131a) may control an adjacent linked, non-hub, or slave product storage apparatus (131b) via connecting linkage (140, 141).
