ABSTRACT An apparatus for fastening stems of crop plants in an upright position to a support means, comprises a wheeled chassis that moves along straddling the row of crop plants, and an automatic stem fastening means carried by the chassis. The chassis has a plant receiving area which receives the plants as the chassis advances. The stem fastening means comprises tape supply means and tape joining means. The tape supply means supplies right and left single tape means each having adhesion means. The tape joining means joins together a right and left single tape means at a joining location within the plant receiving area, wherein as the apparatus moves along the row the tape becomes fastened to the support means, and the stems which are in the upright position are able to enter the joining location so as to become sandwiched between the right and left tape means.
