43218CAN3A ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus for suppressing tinnitus by repositioning the basilar membrane so that the tectorial membrane does not chronically contact the stereocilia of the inner row of hair cells. A preferred mechanism involves the application of a pressure differential to the external ear canal. Preferably, the pressure differential is negative with respect to ambient. Alternatively, a positive pressure may be maintained in the external ear canal and, preferably, statically maintained. Alternative arrangements for repositioning the basilar membrane involve repositioning the ossicles and providing a middle ear pressure either with or without venting to the external ear canal.
