There is provided a surgical instrument for introducing a support strand into the body to treat female urinary incontinence, comprising an elongated, curved shaft having a distal end and having a lumen therein extending at least a portion of the length thereof and terminating at said distal end and through which the support strand may pass. The shaft has a slot on an exterior surface thereof communicating with said lumen along at least a portion of the length from said distal end, allowing the strand to be laterally passed between said lumen to outside said shaft. The instrument further has a pointed element, removably positionable on said distal end of said shaft, for facilitating the insertion of said shaft through the body and connectable at one end to the support strand, and being dimensioned to prevent passage through said lumen when said shaft is inserted through the body.
L'invention concerne un instrument chirurgical servant à implanter une bandelette de support dans le corps de la patiente incontinente. Cette bandelette est constituée d'un axe courbe oblong pourvu d'une extrémité distale insérable dans le corps. Cet axe comprend un passage interne qui se prolonge au moins sur une partie de la longueur de l'axe que traverse la bandelette de support dans une direction axiale. Une fente pratiquée sur la surface externe de l'axe et reliée au passage interne permet à la bandelette de support de traverser latéralement le passage interne et d'adopter une certaine position à l'extérieure de l'axe. Un élément pointu relié à la bande de support au niveau d'une première extrémité est placé amovible sur l'extrémité distale de l'axe pour faciliter l'introduction de l'axe dans le corps. Cet élément pointu peut être soit embouti directement sur la bandelette soit se présenter sous forme d'une longue aiguille au chas de laquelle est fixée amovible la bandelette. Dans un procédé associé, l'axe introduit séquentiellement à deux reprises l'élément pointu dans le corps pour former une boucle autour de l'urètre qui permettra de remédier à l'incontinence. La fente de l'axe permet de séparer l'instrument de la bande sans gêner la boucle.
