Apparatus and method are provided for containing blood flashback during insertion of a guide wire into a blood vessel. The apparatus includes a barrel having a flashback chamber. An inner cannula in the flashback chamber communicates with an inserter needle mounted on the barrel. The inner cannula includes an aperture communicating with the flashback chamber. A porous vent plug is slidably disposed in the chamber in fluid-tight engagement with both the barrel and the inner cannula. The vent plug can be slid from a proximal position where the aperture in the inner cannula is exposed to a distal position where the aperture in the inner cannula is blocked. A guide wire in the inner cannula blocks blood flow. The vent plug and the guide wire are retained proximally of the aperture in the inner cannula until blood flashback is observed. The vent plug is then axially advanced to cover the aperture and stop further blood flow. The guide wire can then be advanced safely into the blood vessel.
Appareil et méthode permettant de contenir le reflux de sang durant l'insertion d'un fil-guide dans un vaisseau sanguin. L'appareil comprend un cylindre muni d'une chambre de reflux. Une canule interne, placée dans la chambre de reflux, communique avec un aiguille d'insertion montée sur le cylindre. Cette canule comprend un orifice qui communique avec la chambre de reflux. Un bouchon à évent poreux s'insère dans la chambre en conservant l'étanchéité à la fois avec le cylindre et avec la canule interne. Ce bouchon peut coulisser d'une position proximale, dans laquelle où l'orifice de la canule interne est exposé, à une position distale, dans laquelle l'orifice de la canule est bloqué. Un fil-guide placé à l'intérieur de la canule bloque l'écoulement sanguin. Le bouchon à évent et le fil-guide sont retenus à l'extrémité proximale de l'orifice de la canule jusqu'à ce que l'on observe un reflux de sang. Le bouchon à évent est alors poussé dans la direction de l'axe de façon à couvrir l'orifice et à stopper tout autre écoulement sanguin. Le fil-guide peut alors être engagé sans danger dans le vaisseau sanguin.
