The present invention provides apparatus for destroying the metallic portion of a medical instrument such as a hypodermic needle, syringe, insulin delivery device, lancet, or scalpel or the like. The apparatus has a first set of electrodes being spaced apart and a power source connected across said first set of electrodes. A first section of the metallic portion of the medical instrument is destroyed when bridging the space between the first set of electrodes. The apparatus has a second set of electrodes being movable relative to the first set of electrodes. The second set of electrodes is not directly connected to the power source. Movement of the second set of electrodes is necessary in order to make electrical contact with said first set of electrodes. When the second set of electrodes are moved into electrical contact with the first set of electrodes a second remaining section of the metallic portion of the medical instrument is destroyed when bridging the space between the second set of electrodes.
