IMPROVED APPARATUS AND METHOD OF HYDRAULICALLY MINING UNCONSOLIDATED MINERAL FORMATIONS ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An improved apparatus and method of hydraulically mining unconsolidated mineral formations, such as tar sands is disclosed wherein a portion of the formation adjacent the overburden/mineral bed interface is injected with a bonding agent to form a generally disc-shaped stabilized region which supports the overburden and prevents the same from migrating downward into the mineral bed during the mining process. A non-rotating protective sleeve telescop- ingly positioned along the length of the mining tool and drill string is additionally utilized to reduce drag forces generated in the mineral bed and prevent excessive tor- tional forces being exerted upon the mining tool during the mining process.
