Abstract In a continuous speech recognition system of my design which employs operator-generated word-marker signals, this invention provides an improvement in the form of a system which trains operators to send signals which coincide in time with the onset of speech production for each word. Those signals act as markers which explicitly delimit the individual words in an utterance. The problem of large vocabulary continuous speech recognition is extremely difficult, if not intractable, given the current state of recognition technology. The recognition of utterances composed of words separated by pauses, however, is a much simpler problem which can be readily handled by available methods and apparatus. Once an utterance has been divided into word-length segments by marker signals, its subsequent analysis is greatly simplified as the initial problem has been reduced to the level of difficulty of a recognizer that deals with words which are separated by pauses. The system of this invention provides six graduated exercises which facilitate the training of operators of my speech recognition system. Someone with ordinary abilities can soon learn to send the required word-marking signals with an acceptable degree of precision. The fifth of the six levels provides the user with helpful prompts during what is otherwise the normal recognition process. Such prompts can be used beyond the training period, as a regular mode of operation of the speech recognition system, but this will not be practical for all applications.
