Particulate mass concentrations of at least two different particulate sizes are monitored and the ratio of the outputs from the sensing devices is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition. In another form of the invention, the rate of change of the ratio of the outputs from the monitoring devices is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition.
