An oil sample is subjected to nuclear electromagnetic irradiation downhole, and the electron and/or mass density of the oil sample is determined by measuring the attenuation of the irradiation and relating the attenuation to the electron density. If the irradiation is high energy gamma ray irradiation, the attenuation is considered to be a function of Compton scattering only, which in turn is related to the electron density of the sample. If X-rays are utilized, attenuation is preferably measured in two energy windows. Using the two different attenuation values found in the different windows, the attenuation due to Compton scattering can be found and related to the electron and/or mass density of the sample. In addition, attenuation due to photoelectric absorption may also be determined and related to the presence of one or more heavy elements in the oil (e.g., sulfur) and/or sanding.
Selon cette invention, on soumet un échantillon de pétrole à des radiations électromagnétiques nucléaires au fond d'un puits, et on détermine la masse spécifique et/ou la densité électronique dudit échantillon de pétrole en mesurant l'atténuation des radiations et en l'associant à l'atténuation à la densité électronique. Si les radiations sont des radiations à rayons gamma d'énergie élevée, on considère l'atténuation comme n'étant qu'une fonction de la diffusion de Compton, qui à son tour est liée à la densité électronique de l'échantillon. Si on utilise des rayons X, on mesure l'atténuation, de préférence, dans deux fenêtres d'énergie. A l'aide des deux valeurs d'atténuation différentes établies dans les différentes fenêtres, on peut déterminer l'atténuation provoquée par la diffusion de Compton et l'associer à la masse spécifique et/ou la densité électronique de l'échantillon. En outre, on peut également déterminer l'atténuation engendrée par l'absorption photoélectrique et l'associer à la présence d'au moins un élément lourd (par exemple, le soufre) dans le pétrole et/ou l'ensablement.
