A computer-controlled illumination system for phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and/or diagnosis. The system comprises; a tunable light source configured to emit illumination comprising a variable selected spectral output and a variable selected wavelenght dependent distribution, a sensor configured to detect light from the tunable light source and transmit data representing the spectral output and wavelenght dependent intensity distribution of the emitted light and a controller connected to the tunable light source and the sensor and containing computer implemented programming to coordinate the tunable light source, the sensor and the processor. The programming varies the selected spectral output and wavelenght depending intensity distribution of the emitted light to provide a desired selected spectral output and wavelenght dependent intensity distribution for phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and diagnosis.
