Methods and apparatus are disclosed for use in procedures related to the electrophysiology of the heart, such as identifying or evaluating the electrical activity of the heart, diagnosing and/or treating conditions associated with the electrophysiology of the heart. An apparatus (200) having thermocouple elements (206, 208) of different electromotive potential conductively connected at a junction (210) is introduced into the interior of the heart and a section of heart tissue is contacted with the junction (210). An electrical current is passed through the thermocouple elements (206, 208) to reduce the temperature of the junction in accordance with the Peltier effect and thereby cool contacted heart tissue. The effect of the cooling may be monitored and, if desired, the section of heart tissue may be treated.
L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil utilisés dans des techniques relatives à l'électrophysiologie du coeur, telle que l'identification ou l'évaluation de l'activité électrique du coeur, le diagnostic et/ou le traitement d'états associés à l'électrophysiologie du coeur. Un appareil (200) présentant des éléments à thermocouple (206, 208) d'un potentiel électromoteur différent, connectés de manière conductrice au niveau d'une jonction (10), est introduit à l'intérieur du coeur et une section de tissu cardiaque est mise en contact avec la jonction (210). On fait passer un courant électrique dans les éléments à thermocouple (206, 208) afin de réduire la température de la jonction selon l'effet Peltier et afin de refroidir ainsi le tissu cardiaque en contact. L'effet du refroidissement peut être contrôlé et, si nécessaire, la section de tissu cardiaque peut être traitée.
