The present invention relates to systems for sharing idle workstation computers that are connected together through a network and shared file system. More particularly, a user of a local host workstation may submit jobs for execution on remote workstations. The systems of the present invention select a remote host that is idle in accordance with a decentralized scheduling scheme and then continuously monitor the activity of the remote host on which the job is executing. If the system detects certain activity on the remote host by one of the remote host's primary users, the execution of the job is immediately suspended to prevent inconvenience to the primary users. The system also suspends job execution if the remote host's load average gets too high. Either way, the suspended job is migrated by selecting another idle remote workstation to resume execution of thesuspended job (from the point in time at which the last checkpoint occurred).
L'invention a trait à des systèmes permettant de partager des ordinateurs de postes de travail interreliés par un réseau et un système à fichiers communs. Plus particulièrement, l'utilisateur d'un poste de travail d'un ordinateur central local peut soumettre des travaux dont l'exécution serait réalisée par des postes de travail éloignés. Le système décrit par l'invention permet de choisir un poste de travail inactif ayant un plan de programmation décentralisé et de surveiller continuellement l'activité de ce poste éloigné par lequel le travail est exécuté. Si le système détecte une certaine activité du poste de travail éloigné qui est commandée par l'un des utilisateurs primaires de ce poste, l'exécution du travail en cours est immédiatement interrompue afin de ne pas importuner les utilisateurs primaires de ce poste. De plus, le système interrompt l'exécution du travail si la moyenne de la charge du poste éloigné devient trop importante. D'une façon ou de l'autre, le travail interrompu est transféré en choisissant un autre poste de travail éloigné inactif pour reprendre l'exécution du travail interrompue ( à compter du moment du dernier point de contrôle).
