Apparatus and methods for treatment of stroke are provided. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention disposes at least one catheter (41) having a distal occlusive member (42) in either the common carotid artery (CCA) or both the vertebral artery (VA) and the CCA on the hemisphere of the cerebral occlusion. Blood flow in the opposing carotid and/or vertebral arteries may be inhibited. Retrograde or antegrade flow may be provided through either catheter (41) independently to effectively control cerebral flow characteristics. Under such controlled flow conditions, a thrombectomy device (200) may be used to treat the occlusion, and any emboli generated are directed into the catheter(s).

L'invention concerne un appareil et des procédés de traitement d'un accident vasculaire cérébral. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, l'invention concerne au moins un cathéter présentant un élément occlusif distal soit dans l'artère carotide commune (CCA), soit dans l'artère vertébrale (VA) et la CCA, dans l'hémisphère de l'occlusion cérébrale. Le débit sanguin dans les artères carotide et/ou vertébrale opposées peut être inhibé.
