An apparatus (10) is being introduced for applying liquid or viscid coating medium (14) onto a coating area (16b) of a moving substrate (U); whereby, in the case of diced application, the substrate (U) comprises the outer surface (16a) of a material web (16) such as paper or carton, or, in the case of indirect application, the substrate comprises the outer surface of a transfer element such as a transfer roll, which transfers the coating medium onto the material web. Furthermore, a coating mechanism (12) is provided with at least one opening (20b2) for the discharge of coating medium (14) onto the substrate (U); whereby, the (at least one) opening (20b2) is positioned at a certain distance (d) from the substrate (U). A panel element (22) is positioned on at least one side of the two margins of the coating area, between the opening of the discharge element (20b2) and the substrate (U), in order to prevent any deposits of the coating medium (14) outside of the coating area, which thus defines the respective margins of the coating area.
