ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Lignite is beneficiated to low sodium, low sulphur, and low moisture content fuel under an atmosphere of saturated water pressure, in the presence of oxygen, air, or the gaseous products of pyrolytic decomposition of lignite, at temperatures up to 360°C. The reaction conditions are determined by the properties of the lignite being beneficiated.
