ABSTRACT A flow dryer for comminuting and dehydrating matter having an inlet duct in series with an agitator followed by a drying duct. The agitator has an inlet communicating with the inlet duct and an outlet communicating with the outlet duct and hot gas is flowed through the agitator. The agitator is equipped with control devices which allow the residence time of matter in the agitator to be varied by varying the characteristics required for comminuted matter to leave the agitator through the agitator outlet. These characteristics may be, for example, weight, density, surface area, volume, or shape. These arrangements allow for improved control of the drying so that different materials can be dried in the flow dryer.
