CANADA ROGERS, BERESKIN & PARR INVENTORS: TITLE: APPARATUS AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF CARBONIZED MATERIAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus and a process for carbonizing material, e.g. organic fibrous material, has a kiln having an exhaust outlet and a retort which has a vent duct for volatiles. A conveying device, preferably a conveyor belt, conveys material into and out of the kiln. A hot gas supply device supplies hot gases around the retort and these are then exhausted out of the exhaust outlet. A combustion device is supplied with the volatiles. The volatiles are combusted to generate hot gases which are supplied to the hot gas supply device.
