An apparatus and process is provided for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from gases and for restoration of hydrogen sulfide removal capacity in nitrogen-treated carbonaceous chars which have become exhausted for hydrogen sulfide capacity when used for the removal of hydrogen sulfide from gas streams. The apparatus has a matrix of removable canisters which contain the nitrogen-treated carbonaceous chars. This process entails directing the gas containing hydrogen sulfide through the canister, washing the spent carbonaceous char with water by flushing/ dynamic washing through the canister to remove the majority of the hydrogen sulfide reaction products. By the use of this process a significant proportion of the original hydrogen sulfide capacity of the nitrogen-treated carbonaceous char is recovered and the canisters can be recycled a large number of times.

L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé permettant d'éliminer l'hydrogène sulfuré contenu dans des gaz et de restaurer la capacité d'élimination de l'hydrogène sulfuré des charbons traités à l'azote, dont ladite capacité s'est épuisée quand ils ont été utilisés pour éliminer l'hydrogène sulfuré contenu dans des flux gazeux. Le dispositif comporte une matrice de contenants amovibles qui contiennent les charbons traités à l'azote. Selon ce procédé, on oblige le gaz contenant l'hydrogène sulfuré à traverser le contenant et on lave le charbon consommé avec de l'eau par rinçage/lavage dynamique dans le contenant, de façon à éliminer la majorité des produits de réaction de l'hydrogène sulfuré. Ce procédé permet de récupérer une proportion significative de la capacité du charbon en hydrogène sulfuré, et les contenants peuvent être recyclés un grand nombre de fois.
