Apparatus for the effective flame-retardant treatment of textiles includes a chamber (1), entry (12) and exit (13) points for the fabric, a duct (13) located within the chamber (1) for the passage of a gas including ammonia through the textile, recycling means (6; 7; 8) to remove at least some of the gas and return it to the chamber, together with sampling means (15) to monitor the ammonia level within the chamber. Preferably, the fabric passes, in a serpentine manner, over a plurality of rollers (4) within the chamber (1). The chamber may also have a sloping roof (5) to prevent condensed liquid from dripping on to the fabric and a gully (10) to collect the condensed liquid. The initial concentration of ammonia is set at between 70% and 90% in order to provide a reservoir of ammonia to compensate for higher ammonia take-up by the fabric at lower temperature.
