ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure herein describes an apparatus and process for the metallothermic reduction of the oxides of volatile metals, such as sodium and magnesium. The apparatus comprises an enclosure within which a reaction chamber is provided, the walls of the chamber being made of graphite. An heating system is disposed inside the enclosure between the chamber and the outer shell of the enclosure for heating the metal oxides with reducing agents to a temperature in the range of 700°C to 1950°C. An inlet to this area is provided to introduce an inert gas at a pressure above the pressure inside the chamber whereby the inert gas diffuses through the graphite walls thereby preventing the vapours to egress through the walls. The vapours are then condensed, the condensed metals collected and the non-condensed vapours directed to another collecting device.
